David Strevel and Jim Lamb - "What's in our camera bag."

Besides the obvious camera bodies and lenses, many of us have, there are a lot of other things from carbon-fiber tripods to garbage bags that we tote around.  We tend to find a better way to carry this stuff every few years.  I'll show you what I carry, and why.  I'll even explain why I upgraded from Canon to Olympus:  Hopefully, you will have a better idea of what's next, when you spend that Peace Camera gift certificate.  David will follow me with what he carries with his Canon equipment.  We will both show examples of what our lenses can do. The second part of the meeting will be my presentation on photography workshops that I attended in Utah in 2009 and 2010. I'll explain what it is like and what I learned.  There will a short slideshow of the images I took.

Photo Challenge - "Cityscapes"

This is the flip side of Landscapes. In stead of nature, the subject is the un-natural/man-made. Anything that is associated with high-rise cities, like Raleigh and Durham, except large natural areas. It could be dumpsters, parking meters, people eating on the sidewalk, to a grand view of the skyline.

Photo Challenge - "Ant's Eye View"

This is one of those perspective themes, not a subject. The idea is to get you away from shooting from human eye level. (We will get you to carry a ladder, later:-) This time, we want you to shoot from below the knees, preferably from surface level. It doesn't have to be on the dirt: it can be a ledge, if it is visible. These shots should be looking up, or at least level. Just think of an ant and what view it may have. There is probably some foreground in your view. Those with articulating LCD viewers will appreciate them. Have fun!

Goodloe Suttler - "Shoot a series of HD photographs on a single subject"

Jim Lamb says - "I met Goodloe on a photography workshop in Moab, Utah. He is also a friend of the workshop instructors. He was actually photographing the petroglyphs, or native-American rock art, found in the Southwest. The results from his 38 Megapixel Hasselblad, and perfection in printing, led to an exhibit at the Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill. Another theme was butterflies, with an exhibit of detailed 40 inch prints in Durham. He is going to show us how he picks a subject, then shoots a series of images, improving on each one, until the images are as if you were right there with the subject."

Mike Acquesta and Jim Lamb - "Club Volunteer Activities"

We will focus (pun intended) on our club volunteers this night. Mike Acquesta, with the help of Jim Lamb, will present what our members did for the Bunn Project. We will also have David Strevel, with the help of Alan Niefield, present our other club projects, such as the Historic Oakwood District Project.

Print Competition - "Macro"

I guess you could call this another perspective print competition, rather than a subject one. Even if you don't have an expensive "macro" lens (1:1 ratio), use what you have, or pick up a closeup lens attachment, and get close to your subjects. It doesn't necessarily have to be nature as a subject, but try to get down to a 1:4 magnification ratio, at least. That translates to frame of about 4" by 6", or smaller, around your subject. A negative at 100%, should not have the subject smaller than 1/4 life-size. Get those knee pads out again.

Photo Challenge - "Reflections"

You can use whatever reflective medium you want: water, glass, chrome; but either the reflection or the view in a reflection is your subject. In other words, you may, or may not, cut out the actual subject that is reflected. Reflect on that for a while.

Brian Fullington - "State Fair"

Brian Fullington started his photographic career as a photojournalist for a metropolitan Boston daily newspaper in the 1970’s.  While there he grew his compositional and lighting skills, and learned to react quickly to photographic opportunities – skills that have served him well over the years.  Brian then spent more than four years as a commercial photographer in Eastern Massachusetts.  After a successful career in sales and marketing at IBM he has moved back into photography on a full-time basis.

Over the years he has developed his talents as a fine art photographer specializing in landscape and travel subjects.  He is fortunate to have the ability to be able to quickly spot strong compositional elements and then use his camera to turn them into appealing images.  Having traveled extensively in Europe, Asia and the U.S. he has built a strong portfolio of scenic, travel and human-interest photographs.
