Monday, Feb 2 Antarctica: Waking Dreams
Come experience the depth and breadth of a journey to Antarctica aboard a converted Soviet "spy" ship. Chris Ogden, an award winning professional fine art photographer and educator, will be presenting an engaging account of "combat shooting" of up to 20 hours a day where opportunities for landscapes, wildlife, and fine art photos abound. TIme permitting, Chris will also include a" Color Management 101" overview of how to deal with the many out of gamut colors that Antarctica presents.

Bio:

Chris Ogden is an award winning professional fine art photographer and educator who is a principal of In the Moment Images, Inc., based in Durham, North Carolina, USA. Chris travels worldwide in pursuit of special moments in special light.

He counts being outside making photographs as a core element of his spiritual practice. In nature, he reconnects to the timeless energies and mysteries that include and connect all. The energies present in particular places, at particular times, can be strong or elusive, yet they are always there, waiting to be found and shared. Whether in "wild places" or those where the hand of man is more dominant, Chris endeavors to find the connections to nature's rhythms and messages that comprise the weft and warp of our universal fabric and consciousness.

Margo Pinkerton & Arnie Zann: Creativity and Seeking Your Own Vision

Margo Pinkerton and Arnie Zann of Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures (www.BCphotoadventures.com) and Zann and Pinkerton Photography (www.ZannPinkertonPhotography.com) will be speaking on a subject that is a perpetual challenge to photographers and all creators.  Among the topics they will address are how you seek and implement your own vision, what to do when you get into a rut, and exercises you can do that will help your photography and ability to see with a fresh eye.  They will also show recent work that they did in 2008 before and during their workshops.  So9 for an evening of inspiration, come join us for Margo and Arnie's presentation.  Some of you will remember them from last winter when they came to speak to our group.

Bios:

Margo Pinkerton and Arnie Zann run Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures teaching workshops here and abroad to people of all levels of photography.  They both started out in the editorial field, Arnie with LIFE, Time, National Geographic, GEO, etc., while Margo's stock photography was picked up by National Geographic Traveler, GEO, Caribbean Travel & Life, a plethora of other magazines, corporations, and coffee-table books.

When they joined their photo businesses, they continued to work for both corporate and high-end editorial clients.  And because they had both  taught photography, given seminars, and lectures to professional photo and designer groups, they morphed Margo's original Barefoot Contessa Adventures into Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures.  Currently, they run ten regularly-scheduled photo workshops with a maximum ratio of 6:1 students to instructors as well as private workshops for individuals, families, and small groups.

Monday, Apr 20 Competition - Portraits
Monday, May 4

Cal Wong:  Close-Up Photography as a Way of Seeing -- Light, subject and composition are the elements of a photographic image.  The greater the control over each element, the more the photographer can be said to "make" an image.   In contrast to landscape scenics, in close-ups, the photographer can exercise considerable control over light, subject and composition.  Furthermore, close-up images often show components of the subject that are likely to be new to the shooter as well as to the viewer of the final image. While we see the classic subjects of landscape photography exploited by more skilled and better-equipped shooters (how many of us use the medium- and large format cameras that make Outdoor Photographer's covers?), the aspect of novelty becomes more infrequent in scenic images. (By the way, you generally don't need to be up before dawn and drive for hours for close-up shooting.)
Using a variety of subjects Cal's talk will cover the shooting conditions and minimum of equipment that will permit increasing control over close-up images and demonstrate the compositional tools that make compelling images.
In the close-up of a honeybee, a flower or a rusting machine, the viewer is invited to see relationships among biological and graphic components that, while "under our noses" are nevertheless, rarely observed. To the degree that art is what engages and enlarges our perceptions of the world, close-up photography can provide such an opportunity.

Monday, May 18 Bruce Dixson-- "Underwater Photography: The Challenges of Keeping the Camera Dry and the Photographer Alive"

Bruce will give a brief history of underwater photography illustrated with some old film cameras, discuss the differences and similarities of underwater to land photography, and demonstrate some current equipment ranging from point and shoot to professional SLR setups. He will conclude with a slideshow of some of his favorite images from around the world.
