Print Competition (PCC) Guidelines and Rules

    • By holding competitions, members get feedback from our judges on their images. It is an effective way to learn and improve our photography.

    • Eligibility:

Print Competitions are open to all members in good standing. There is no time limit on the original image capture. Both digital and film based images are acceptable and they must have been captured by the entrant.
      In addition:

      • Images receiving 1st, 2nd, 3rd, HM or 9 CANNOT be resubmitted to a subsequent print competition.
      • Images scoring less than 9 (6 - 8) in a previous print competition MAY be resubmitted to a subsequent print competition, provided it has been significantly altered, converted from Monochrome to Color or Color to Monochrome.
      • A Print Competition winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd, HM, 9pt) CANNOT be submitted to any POM competition.
      • A winning POM entry (1st, 2nd or 3rd place) MAY be submitted to a Print Competition.
      • There is no minimum limit on image size.
      • Prints including mat boards cannot exceed 22" High (will not fit under viewing lamp) and 24" wide (so light reaches entire image).
      • Images on Canvas, Acrylic, or metal are not acceptable. Paper prints only will prevent damage to the submissions.

    • Subject Themes:

Each year there are normally four to six competitions. Four will be print and up to two will be digital. The Competition Chairman determines the competition themes, with input from the CCCC board. At least two will be an Open theme. Photographic content should be suitable for all age public viewing.

    • Submission Categories:

Members may submit any combination of up to THREE from the categories below. While we encourage members to select at least one from each category, it is no longer a requirement.

      • Monochrome Prints:  The category encompasses traditional black and white (B&W) prints and monochromatic prints (grayscale, sepia, and single color tints).
      • Color prints:  The category encompasses full color prints or multicolor tinted monochromatic prints, including duotones.

    • Submission Process:

Members must complete one application form PER IMAGE. Link to form will be sent to members via email a week prior to competition. Deadline for submission will be midnight the Friday before the competition . Entries received after that may not be scored and eligible for points towards Photographer of the year. Three entries in total are permitted per member per competition. Members may submit any combination of color vs. monochrome.

Prints must be mounted neatly on a clean, stiff board, preferably foam core or gator board, but not cardboard. The print and mount should be free of any significant distractions, such as dirty mat/mount, creases or crooked mount. Significant distractions in presentation may reduce points awarded. Matting is highly encouraged to prevent print damage during competition, though it is not required. Overall size must not be more than 22" tall x 24" wide which includes mount and mat, if any. Frames are not allowed. Neither the photographer's name, nor the print title may appear on the front of the print or matting

Entrants should check-in no later than 15 minutes prior to competition. Labels will be provided to you upon check-in to apply to the back of your print in the upper right hand corner.

    • Competition Scoring:

A 9 point scoring will be provided for each submitted photograph. Judges are expected to comment as part of the teaching process. Adherence to theme, technical quality, composition and impact are factors of major concern, but judges may use any basis of point allocation they desire.

Awards will be given for first place, second place, third place, and honorable mentions in each submission category (Color and Monochrome). HMs should be awarded for every six entries beginning with 12. Any photographs receiving 9 points that did not receive an award will get 1 point for POY.

Winners should forward a JPEG to competition@capcitycameraclub.com along with title of image and award for display on the website. Points are awarded as follows:

      Place Points
      First Place 10
      Second Place 7
      Third Place 5
      Honorable Mention 3
      Remaining 9 point prints 1

    • Participation Minimums:

Should there be a small number of submissions in a category, the following rules will govern:

      • Minimum of three entries per category. If there are fewer than 3 entries, fold the categories to create a combined print competition.
      • If there are 3 to 5 entries, give first place award only.
      • 6 to 8 entries, give first and second place awards only.
      • 9 or more entries, give first, second, and third place awards only.
